Chocolate Log Roll

Vegan Chocolate Log Roll Recipe:

Yields: 1 log/10 slices

Sponge Dry Ingredients:

  • 90g plain flour
  • 100g sweetener (avoid artificial)
  • 25g cocoa powder
  • 0.5 tbsp. baking powder
  • 0.5 tbsp. baking soda

Sponge Wet Ingredients:

  • 140ml dairy free milk (I used hazelnut)
  • 50ml vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar

Butter Cream Ingredients:

  • 50g dairy free butter
  • 35g sweetener (avoid artificial)
  • 35g cornflour

*You will also need a big bar of chocolate (I used 74% dark dairy free chocolate) to melt onto the outside of the log*

Sponge Method:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 170*C (fan oven)
  2. Mix the dry ingredients together thoroughly in a bowl
  3. Mix the wet ingredients in a separate bowl then add to the dry ingredients
  4. Use a fork to whisk/mix the mixture together until all is combined and smooth
  5. In a rectangular baking tray (lined with baking paper) pour out the mixture and ensure it’s level
  6. Pop in the oven for about 30 minutes – it’s cooked when you stick in a cocktail stick and nothing sticks to it
  7. When cooked remove the sponge from the tray to cool

Butter Cream Method:

  1. In a high speed blender blend the sweetener, then add the cornflour and blend again – this will make a sugar free icing sugar
  2. In a mixer add the butter and ‘icing sugar’ and mix until combined and smooth

Assembly Method:

  1. When the sponge has cooled, smooth the butter cream onto the sponge then begin to roll from one end – it may crumble slightly but stick with it, if you stop it’ll make it worse
  2. Wrap in cling film and leave to set in the fridge for about 30 minutes – you don’t have to do this but it’ll help it stay in a roll
  3. Then remove from the cling film, melt the chocolate and using a spoon coat the outside of the log
  4. When completely coated place back in the fridge for 10-15 minutes until hardened
  5. Then cut into slices and enjoy!
